General Definition of Work

Performs complex work in Microsoft 365, Exchange Hybrid environments, VMware, SharePoint backups, and disaster recovery. In collaboration with IT professionals will support technology solutions that align with business objectives. Work is performed under the general direction of the Infrastructure Service Manager.

Special Note

This position may require occasional evening and weekend work to perform system upgrades, updates, or resolve critical issues. Participation in an on-call rotation for after-hours support may also be required.

Ideal Candidate

We are seeking a motivated and skilled Systems Administrator with extensive experience in Microsoft 365, Exchange Hybrid environments, VMware, SharePoint, backups, and disaster recovery to join our IT team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and security of our organization's virtualization infrastructure, email systems, collaboration platforms, and backup solutions. This role requires a proactive approach to ensure high availability, performance, and resilience of critical IT systems. The Systems Administrator will collaborate closely with other IT professionals and departments to implement and support technology solutions that align with business objectives.

Essential Functions

VMware Administration:

Install, configure, and manage VMware vSphere environments, including ESXi hosts, vCenter Server, and virtual machines and VDI desktops.

Monitor performance, ensure system availability, and troubleshoot issues related to VMware infrastructure.

Implement and maintain virtualization best practices and security standards.

Microsoft Exchange Administration:

Manage and administer Microsoft Exchange Server environments, both on-premises and in a hybrid configuration with Exchange Online (Office 365), to ensure seamless email services integration and performance.

Configure and maintain mailboxes, distribution lists, and email security settings.

Monitor Exchange servers for performance, availability, and compliance with SLAs.

SharePoint Administration:

Administer and support Microsoft SharePoint Server environments, including SharePoint Online (Office 365), for collaboration and document management.

Configure SharePoint sites, libraries, workflows, and permissions according to organizational needs.

Monitor SharePoint performance and troubleshoot issues related to content management and user access.

Backups and Disaster Recovery:

Develop, implement, and manage backup and disaster recovery strategies and plans for critical systems and data.

Perform regular backups, including testing and validation, to ensure data integrity and availability in the event of system failures or disasters.

Document and maintain recovery procedures and protocols.

System Maintenance and Monitoring:

Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as updates, patches, and system optimizations, for VMware, Exchange, SharePoint, and backup systems.

Monitor system performance, resource utilization, and security metrics to proactively address issues and ensure optimal operation.

Maintain comprehensive documentation of system configurations, processes, and procedures.

Security and Compliance:

Implement and enforce security measures to protect VMware, Exchange, SharePoint, and backup environments from security threats and vulnerabilities.

Conduct regular security audits, vulnerability assessments, and penetration testing.

Ensure compliance with organizational policies, industry regulations, and best practices.

User Support and Training:

Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance to users for VMware, Exchange, SharePoint, and backup systems.

Develop and deliver user training and documentation to promote efficient use of collaboration tools, email services, and backup solutions.

Project Management and Collaboration:

Lead or participate in IT projects related to system upgrades, migrations, and new implementations.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess business requirements, recommend solutions, and implement technology initiatives.

 
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field with coursework in Information Technology/Computer Science, and moderate experience in System Administration, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong working knowledge with VMware vSphere ESXi, ADFS Server, Microsoft Exchange Server (2016/2019/Online), SharePoint Online, and backup solutions (e.g., Veeam, Commvault); virtualization technologies, email systems management, vSans, collaboration platforms, and backup methodologies; knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., Office 365, Azure) and hybrid cloud environments.

Skill in designing and implementing backup and disaster recovery strategies, including backup scheduling, testing, and recovery procedures; skill in analytical and problem solving.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders

Working Conditions

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires speaking or hearing, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Appointment subject to successful background investigation and City paid post-employment medical examination after offer of employment has been made.
