JOB DESCRIPTION:
Performs work patrolling city parks and identifying unsafe conditions, inappropriate, suspicious, or unsafe behavior, ensuring the safety of the public by notifying the appropriate personnel to ensure the safety of Citizens, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the supervision of the assigned Police Sergeant.
Ideal candidates who have completed, high school, a GED program, trade school, or a college/university course of study and have an interest in law enforcement or public service. This internship offers a behind-the-scenes look at law enforcement through hands-on experience and professional mentorship. Interns will assist with department operations, observe day-to-day activities, and contribute to meaningful projects all while gaining valuable exposure to the inner workings of public safety and community policing.

Lake Havasu City Police Department is now accepting applications for a paid contractual Police Intern position. This opportunity is designed for individuals interested in a future in law enforcement or public service, but who may not yet meet the age requirements for the police academy or are still considering whether that path is right for them.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or GED and have an interest in law enforcement or public service. Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Meet the objectives outlined in the training procedural manual for the apprenticeship program within the set timeframe.
Ability to pass an extensive background investigation.
Valid Driver’s License of the appropriate class.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required and are subject to change as needs and job requirements change. Position assignments may vary. Patrols city parks and recreation areas and identifies inappropriate, suspicious, or unsafe behavior or conditions.
Monitors park activities and users; enforces park policies and regulations.
Performs park security activities; monitors events; identifies and reports unsafe conditions and vandalism.
Exercises judgment and independent action while completing routine patrols of the parks, conducting security watches, addressing parking complaints, and completing private property crash reports.
These tasks will be completed within the spectrum of training and within legal and departmental constraints.
Answers routine questions and assists park users as required.
Support the relationship between the city and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and city staff; promote city goals, priorities, and vision, and comply with all department and city policies and procedures.
Anticipates and corrects problems or notifies appropriate personnel to ensure the safety of Citizens.
Radios for police and/or fire-medical personnel in emergency situations.
Assist with community service programs and community events.
Operates and maintains motor vehicles requiring a valid driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Gain knowledge of policies and regulations, practices, and procedures; knowledge of identifying and reporting unsafe conditions; some knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department and of PR/Parks.
Skill in exercising judgment and independent actions; learned skills in community service programs and community events.
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear reports; ability to deal courteously, but firmly with the public; ability to analyze situations and to adapt quickly, effectively, and reasonably in regards to surrounding hazards and circumstances; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with associates and the general public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel and frequently standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to bloodborne pathogens; work is generally in a moderate location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Applicants for employment opportunities should be aware of the Lake Havasu City policies concerning the use of drugs and alcohol. These policies have not been altered by the passage of Proposition 207. The use of recreational marijuana is a violation of the City's Drug Free Workplace Policy. All positions within the City are required to submit to a pre-employment drug test. A positive result for drugs tested under the policy, including recreational marijuana, may be grounds for withdrawal of an offer of employment.
The City reserves the right to consider only the most highly qualified applicants. The succeeding examination processes may be required: training and experience, testing, panel interview, employment eligibility verification (EEV) requirements, personnel evaluation profile (PEP), polygraph test, background investigation and alcohol/drug screening test. Appointment subject to successful background investigation and City paid postemployment medical examination after offer of employment has been made.
