Position Summary

The Diesel Mechanic is a certified mechanic who specializes in working on all tractor trailers and heavy equipment. The Diesel Mechanic will perform BIT Trailer Inspection Record Program forms required by DOT. This position ensures accurate compilation, and acts as liaison between the maintenance department and management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

Providing emergency/unscheduled repairs of production equipment during production and performing scheduled maintenance repairs of production equipment during machine service.

Preparing and setting up machinery for scheduled production runs.

Performing mechanic skills including, but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic troubleshooting and repair of packaging and production machines.

Reading and interpreting equipment manuals and work orders to perform required maintenance and service.

Complying with OSHA Safety and Health rules.

Operating within standard operating procedures and Job Safety Analysis.

Operating forklift, truck, etc.

Cleaning and maintaining work area.

Turning off and locking out equipment when not in use.

Performing a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor in heavy projects; performing manual work.

Maintaining a clean job site: picking up all tools and equipment and secure job site each day to eliminate potential hazards.

Operating trucks and equipment, such as mechanized broom, forklift, dozer, loader, and other small equipment and tools to maintain production.

Maintain a maintenance schedule and provide all purchase orders to the accounting department.

Ensuring that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed, bringing problems to the attention of the Lead, Safety Director, or HR Manager.

Perform other office duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Technical training; exposure to high-speed equipment.
  • Two or more years of related experience in packing machines/production machines.
  • Exceptional organization and time management skills.
  • Work independently.
  • Manual dexterity required for operating machinery.
  • Ability to be a team player.
  • Multitask efficiently.
  • High attention to details, ability to take directions, self-check and follow up on work.
  •  Ability to apply discretion, trust with confidential company information.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid and appropriate state driver’s license prior to employment.
  • Ability to perform manual work following verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects, walk, and stand for extended periods of time and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.
  • Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.
  • Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.

 The employee frequently is required to use hands or finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit; reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to fifteen pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risks of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
